Main Library Branch Manager III (Carnegie)
Salary Range: 65,000-70,000 annually
Reports to: Assistant Director for Public Services

Nature of the Work
Under the general direction of the Assistant Director for Public Services, serves as the Main Library Branch Manager III for JDL's flagship location, Carnegie. Responsible for day-to-day operations, including facility, security and technology issues, programs and services, supervision of professional and support staff (Reference, Youth, Circulation and Outreach), selection and maintenance of the collection, and implementation of policy and procedural changes. Serves as a liaison with local agencies and the general public throughout the Jackson community to share information, maintain positive public relations and promote library services.
Examples of Work

  *   Directs and supervises the operations of the Main Library.
  *   Selects and trains new branch staff, evaluates staff work performance and offers feedback as needed.
  *   Supervises JDL staff assigned to school libraries in Jackson County.
  *   Assists patrons at the public service desk 10% of weekly hours by providing reference services and circulation assistance.
  *   Oversees and participates in the selection and ordering of materials in accordance with branch materials budget. Oversees the maintenance of the collection.
  *   Oversees coordination of Main Library programming and outreach efforts.
  *   Supervises the maintenance and upkeep of the branch building and grounds, furniture and equipment by communicating needs to facilities department or taking responsibility as needed.
  *   Participates in short and long-range planning, recommends policy and establishes procedures, develops action plans. Oversees recording and submission of branch statistics.
  *   Prepares the annual branch budget including the projected costs of equipment, furniture and other budget items; calculates, estimates and submits budget to Library administration for approval; implements, monitors and spends approved budget.
  *   Supports the work and activities of the Friends of JDL group.
  *   Plans and communicates branch technology needs. Evaluates new technology on behalf of the branch.
  *   Provides technical support and assistance to Library staff and patrons in the use of computer and other library equipment.
  *   Represents JDL professionally and in the community by joining groups and organizations respective to position at a local, state or national level.
  *   Performs other duties as assigned.
Desired characteristics

  *   Passion for working with and serving people.
  *   Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods and practices of public library operations, including current and future trends.
  *   Experience with labor relations in a union setting (preferred).
  *   Considerable knowledge of available circulating materials and basic reference sources.
  *   Demonstrated knowledge of public library computer hardware and software applications.
  *   Demonstrated management and leadership skills necessary to plan and administer the services of a large-sized library.
  *   Ability to work under general supervision with latitude in exercising independent judgment and discretion subject to Library policies and procedures and professional practices.
  *   Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work with a wide variety of individuals and establish effective working relationships. Demonstrated skill in leading teams and building consensus.
  *   Analytical ability to research information; maintains statistical records and summarizes findings in a written document.
  *   Visual acuity and physical skills necessary to retrieve library materials from shelves and storage areas, maintain library materials and operate equipment. The incumbent is required to have the physical ability to push/pull fully loaded book carts and lift/carry materials weighing up to 15 pounds.
  *   Hearing ability to answer telephone and patron inquiries.
  *   Computer skills necessary to effectively utilize word processing and spreadsheet computer software applications and Internet services.
Employment Qualifications
Education: Possession of a Master's degree or its equivalent in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution.
Experience: A minimum of four to six years of progressively more responsible public library experience, preferably in a main/central library setting.
Requirements: Possession of a Permanent Professional Librarian's Certificate granted by the Library of Michigan. Some evening and weekend shifts may be required.
