Canton Public Library currently has a new position open with our Information Technology Department (now through December 19, 2016.) Following are the main details of the position along with the Job description and requirements.

Starting Salary:                  $57,100 - $72,800 annually
Scheduled Hours:             Full Time - thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hours per week

DEPARTMENT HEAD, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY


Due to a retirement, the Canton Public Library is seeking a Department Head of Information Technology to oversee the IT Department. The Information Technology Department Head works under the Director and alongside the department heads of Business Services, Circulation Services, Community Relations and Information Services. The successful candidate will demonstrate strategic thinking, long-range planning skills, confidentiality and discretion, excellence in service to internal and external customers, highly-skilled management of both people and projects, and the ability to work across departments to reach the library's goals.
The Canton Public Library, serving 90,000 residents of the Charter Township of Canton, is a nationally award-winning library and the busiest single-location public library in the state, located on the western edge of Wayne County in southeast Michigan. Our independent public library is governed by a six-member Board of Trustees elected at-large every four years, who provide strategic and fiduciary governance as outlined in Michigan Public Act 164 of 1877. The library has a dedicated millage which provides annual operating revenues of $5 million, employs just under 100 people (56 FTEs), and circulated 1.4 million items while welcoming 487,095 visitors in 2015.



POSITION SUMMARY

Under the management of the Library Director, the Information Technology Department Head is responsible for all aspects of department operations. The Information Technology Department Head oversees all of the library's technology initiatives, ensuring the satisfaction of staff and patrons with the library's equipment, software, connectivity, website, and online catalog.  The Information Technology Department Head works with the Library Director and other Department Heads as part of the library's management team to plan the library's development as a whole and within the department. This position is classified as a regular full-time position and is exempt from overtime. The nature of the work requires evening and weekend hours.



PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

*         Responsible for the appropriate selection, training, mentorship, management, scheduling, evaluation, and discipline of department staff.

*         Responsible for the management of the library's physical and virtual technology infrastructure.

*         Prioritizes Information Technology workloads, adapts department procedures, and manages workflow, coordinating with other department heads as appropriate.

*         Develops annual department budget in conjunction with the management team and the accountant, allocating and monitoring expenditures and approving purchase orders and disbursements within those approved amounts and as authorized by the Library Director.

*         Identifies, evaluates, and negotiates with hardware and software vendors and manages those contracts and systems.

*         As part of the management team, develops, recommends, and interprets library policies and procedures, and is able to communicate them politely and professionally to both staff and the public.

*         Actively participates in long range planning, including strategic planning, development of objectives, translating library-wide initiatives into department-specific tasks and individual goals, and coordinating departmental efforts within the framework of the entire library.

*         Encourages staff development and growth and fosters good employee morale through training, conferences, and workshops.

*         Serves on committees within the library and the community; speaks to local groups and attends and presents at local, regional, state, or national conferences as a representative of the library.

*         Monitors trends and best practices in the industry and society, including community demographics, and recommends appropriate and innovative initiatives and/or changes in the library's service approach, procedures, programs, or services.

*         Maintains departmental statistics and submits statistics and reports as needed.

*         Handles administrative responsibilities as assigned in the absence of the Library Director.

*         Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog.  Contributes content as appropriate.

*         Accepts special assignments or duties in support of the library's goals and objectives.



REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

*         Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that encompasses the knowledge and skills typically acquired by pursuing such a degree.

*         Two years of supervisory or management experience in a public library or comparable customer service environment.

*         Three years of experience in a public library or comparable customer service environment.

*         Demonstrated understanding of the theories and practices of public service and public libraries.

*         Possession of high-level verbal and written communications skills and the ability to deliver tactful and decisive explanations of library policies, procedures, and decisions to the public and to staff.

*         Experience with budget development and management.

*         Familiarity with MARC records, library automation systems, and fielded data.

*         Demonstrated experience with database management.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

*         Master's degree in computer science, information technology, library/information science (from an ALA-accredited institution), or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that encompasses the knowledge and skills typically acquired by pursuing such a degree.

*         Demonstrated ability to select, adapt, and apply new techniques and methods to a public library environment.

*         Demonstrated experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc.'s Sierra automation system.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

*         Sufficient physical agility to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, sit, lift up to 40 lbs., and push carts weighing up to 200 lbs.

*         Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to grab, hold, process, and shelve materials and supplies, and read small print on labels.

*         Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate in writing and verbally.

*         Sufficient vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form.

*         Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a fast-paced environment.

*         Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values.

*         Able to work with minimal direction and effectively manage and direct the work of others.

*         Able to prioritize and organize work for self and others according to time requirements.

*         Able to organize, analyze, and interpret data and make recommendations to the Library Director and management team.

*         Ability to multi-task and to manage concurrent projects with a large staff.

*         Ability to adapt to changing circumstances that require new procedures, new schedules, different assignments, etc.
