*Salary Range:*   $48,054 - $68,386



*Schedule:           *37.5 hours per week, up to two nights and weekends
required

*Typical Duties:*



A person in this classification has the professional administrative
responsibility to:

   - Serve as one of the five members of the library’s management team and
   represent the  department’s service area
   - Participate in planning library objectives and services and in
   recommending policies
   - Work independently within the broad guidelines set by library policies
   and the Library Director.
   - With other department managers, assume responsibilities for
   supervision of library in absence of library director
   - Direct and coordinate services and staff in the Outreach and
   Bookmobile Services Department of the library including 2 bookmobiles which
   make over 40 stops a week, 6 mini-branches and 7 deposit collections, and
   the Oakland County Talking Book Service which serves over 1,500 clients who
   are blind and physically handicapped.
   - Establish the schedule, work assignments and conduct performance
   reviews for the other employees in the department
   - Maintain effective communications within the department and with
   other library departments
   - Coordinate department services and operations within the total library
   operation
   - Work on the Outreach Services public desk to provide professional
   reader's advisory and reference services to  customers
   - Instruct customers in use of the library and its resources especially
   customers with special needs
   - Select and analyze materials for collection development
   - Plan and provide library services for customers in conjunction with
   other Outreach Services librarians
   - Work with community groups, organizations, agencies, to coordinate,
   promote, and expand library services
   - Supervise and/or prepare content for publicity and brochures promoting
   department programs and services
   - Maintain and compile departmental statistics and reports as necessary
   - Attend professional meetings and maintain active membership in  local,
   regional, state and national associations
   - Coordinate library volunteers in the Outreach Services Department and
   serve as the volunteer in-take person for the library
   - Maintain an awareness of new developments and trends in the field
   through professional journals, workshops, conferences, etc.
   - Perform related duties as required



*Qualifications and Abilities:*

   - Master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited library
   school
   - Three years progressively responsible professional public library
   experience
   - An understanding of accessibility issues in library services as they
   related to elderly, handicapped, mobility challenged or mentally impaired
   individuals.
   - A strong commitment to and experience with assistive technology
   - High energy, self-motivation to create new services in an active
   library
   - Positive attitude toward library users with special needs
   - Experience working with the public and a desire to meet and serve that
   public
   - Thorough knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of public library
   service and library policies and procedures
   - Ability to make administrative decisions, interpret policies, and
   supervise staff
   - Ability to motivate, establish and maintain effective working
   relationships with subordinates, associates, supervisors, volunteers, other
   community agencies and the public
   - Ability to initiate and plan library programs and services
   - Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and
   concisely in written and oral form
   - Ability to plan and implement departmental goals
   - Supervisory ability to direct work flow, develop procedures, and
   organize and coordinate departmental operations and procedures within the
   total library operation
   - Demonstrated knowledge of library materials and resources
   - Ability to think analytically and to develop new or revised systems,
   procedures, and work flow
   - Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment
   - Full range of Internet skills
   - Considerable knowledge of website structure and desirable content, and
   commercially available licensed databases
