[Mcls-print-storage] MI-SPI fall meeting

Hello everyone,

Yes, many MI-SPI topics to discuss when we meet. I may be attending MLS for a day, not sure yet, but I can always meet in Lansing. Whatever seems most convenient for all.

I like Doug’s suggestion of a steering committee. I’m interested in discussing plans for the addition of new members and the refresh of data. And, (oh my goodness, Bob!), I want to hear more about updating MeL records. I’m wondering, given the number of items listed, if we should plan for a full day agenda?

There are also logistical issues with doing massive updates to records for those libraries participating in MEL.
Our cataloger has imposed a self limit of updating no more than 5,000 records a day on MEL. So adding the
583 note took EMU, 200K records/5K=40 days to get done.

We may have to work with MEL and amongst ourselves to manage any major reload of bibliographic data resulting from updating our records
due to new libraries coming in and assuming retention responsibility.

I will be attending MLA but could also attend a Lansing meeting.

In addition to the topics Randy outlined I would value a discussion of the big picture elements that Doug refers to below.
In particular it would be good to construct a timeline and have a discussion about current refresh thoughts among the original group, plans for the integration of the new libraries and if we are seeking any new recruits.

At one stage we talked about off-setting the new libraries against libraries with large retention commitments who wanted relief, particularly CMS which is only committed to retention for 5 yrs. I'm not sure where that conversation ended up and if it requires a large scale refresh by SCS or could be accomplished through the MCLS reporting tool or other mechanism.

Also agree about talking about the 583 statements in WorldCat and the idea of a steering committee.

Hello, everyone,

I am not attending MLA, but am happy to come to Lansing for a meeting.

I've had some conversations with individuals about a few different things that I'd be interested in discussing as a whole group:

-583 statement in WorldCat. I spoke briefly with Bill Carney from OCLC at ALA and he indicated they are interested in talking with us about integrating our holdings commitments into WorldCat. I wonder if it would make sense to set up a call or webinar with him at some point to learn more.

-Data refresh to further integrate new members. When are we looking at doing this, who is interested in participating, etc.

-Steering committee. Do we want a small group of representatives to set agendas, keep momentum, set the direction for the group, etc.?

Hello, all. Our last MI-SPI meeting was in February, and I'm wondering if it's time to schedule another meeting. It looks like we there are issues to discuss about use of the database, changing retention commitments, notifying about lost/missing items, etc. Are there other issues?

One option for a meeting is to work it around the MLA conference, which will be in Lansing. Otherwise, we'll look for a date earlier in October.
