Subject: Re: Maryland AskUsNow!: "Copy and Paste Articles into Chat" Student Assignment Questions?

Thanks to staff who have quickly asked for clarification about helping out the Juvenile Services students:

Copying and Pasting Text: This QuestionPoint blog post explains how to copy and paste text into chat, including the email option

http://questionpoint.blogs.com/questionpoint_247_referen/2007/08/questionpoint-b.html

The students have also been encouraged to learn how to find information in SAILOR Databases: http://www.sailor.lib.md.us/services/databases/ and Research Tools: http://www.prattlibrary.org/research/tools/.

These online resources/research tools can be shared with the students because they are educational and help the students do online research and searches. The students are not allowed to receive websites directly to articles, videos, PDFs, Docs, etc....

One agreement that the students' teacher(s) and I reached was that finding and giving information in the right ways will not be 100%. This is similar to how the teacher(s) and their assistants monitor the students' computer usage, but some students are still able to sneak in questions for their own interest.

Please let me know if I can clarify anything else to help out the Juvenile Services students and their teachers.

Thanks,

Paul

Dear QP 24/7 Cooperative Supervisors:

Please be aware that Maryland AskUsNow!, secondary educational level students have been online to ask for information (usually articles and court cases) for their school assignments. These students are from MD Department of Juvenile Services schools, have mostly identified themselves as where they are from (and not necessarily their school's location) and are prepared to use chat. They are ONLY allowed to ask for information specific to their school assignments. They are not allowed to ask for information for personal interest or about their families and themselves.

AskUsNow! QP Admins will do their best to send information about the students' assignments in advance, including dates and times the students will be online.

The students are not allowed to receive direct links to sources. If you feel comfortable copying and pasting articles, court cases, and other documents into chat for them, please do so. If you do not feel comfortable copying and pasting sources, the students have to request that the information get emailed to their teacher. The students will most likely not share the teacher's email, but still mark the chat session for follow-up with a librarian's note that asks the chat sessions be sent to Paul and Becca, the AskUsNow! Admins.

The students have also been encouraged to learn how to find information in SAILOR Databases: http://www.sailor.lib.md.us/services/databases/ and Research Tools: http://www.prattlibrary.org/research/tools/.

Finally, please be ready to chat with the students. They have experienced events in life that several of us should be lucky we have not experienced. They are ready to chat and thank you for your research help. Please contact Paul (pchasen at prattlibrary.org<mailto:pchasen at prattlibrary.org>) or Becca (rstarr at prattlibrary.org<mailto:rstarr at prattlibrary.org>) if you have any questions. Thanks!

-Paul
