I wanted to share a free resource I became aware of today through Michigan Tech's Mind Trekkers program. I spent a fantastic morning up at Lake Superior State University, which was hosting a Mind Trekkers event for the Eastern Upper Peninsula's middle school students. We had over 400 area students from the Superior District Library's service area come through, and the people from Tech shared with us the resources that are available for free online at their site at https://www.mtu.edu/mindtrekkers/
They have over 200 STEM projects, including instructions, links to YouTube videos, and even where to buy the supplies on Amazon. All Free. Our project was the Human Tuning Fork, and if you haven't done this, I highly recommend trying it. All you need is an all-metal item like a spoon, fork, spatula, or metal slinky (I highly recommend the slinky), some string, and your two index fingers.
All of the projects listed on their site would make great in-library programs, as well as easy to make take-home kits for families for all ages. The people from Tech were helpful, friendly, and couldn't thank us enough for participating in the event. If you want more information from them, their contact email is: Mind Trekkers mindtrekkers at mtu.edu<mailto:mindtrekkers at mtu.edu>.
Thanks, and have a great weekend.
Lisa
