Brown wins 2019–2020 ALA presidency
Wanda Brown, director of Library Services at the C.G. O’Kelly Library, Winston-Salem State University, Winston Salem, North Carolina, has been elected president-elect of the American Library Association.
Brown received 6,066 votes, while her opponent, Peter Hepburn, head librarian, College of the Canyons, Santa Clarita, California, received 4,066 votes
As ALA president, Brown will be the chief elected officer for the oldest and largest library association in the world.  She will serve as president-elect for one year before stepping into her role as president at the close of the 2019 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

ALA announces election ballot measure results
The American Library Association (ALA) announced the outcomes of three ballot measures regarding a proposed membership dues adjustment and an amendment to ALA executive director education requirements.
The proposed amendment to ALA Policy A.4.1.1, which would require ALA’s next executive director to hold an ALA-accredited master’s degree was not approved. A minimum of 25 percent of ALA members was required to vote in order to carry the amendment forward. A total of 10,405 voted on this question, representing 20.79 percent of the eligible voters. 3,890 voted for MLS preferred, and 6,515 voted for MLS required. The Executive Board will now proceed with planning for the search process.
By a vote of 7,663 to 2,684 personal member dues will increase between $1 and $5 in September 2018, depending upon the membership type. On a separate measure, by a vote of 7,420 to 2,862, ALA members approved a dues adjustment that will increase association dues over the next five years not to exceed the percentage change in the national average Consumer Price Index (CPI), with the review and approval of the ALA Executive Board.

ALA Nominating committee seeks candidates for 2019 election
The Nominating Committee for the 2019 ALA election is soliciting nominees to run on the 2019 spring ballot for the offices of ALA President-elect, Treasurer, and Councilor-at-large. The committee will select two candidates to run for President-elect, two candidates to run for Treasurer, and no fewer than 50 candidates for the 33 at-large Council seats to be filled in the 2019 spring election.

Nation’s libraries prepare for Money Smart Week®, April 21-28
It is never too early to become financially literate. At every stage in life, we are faced with financial issues, whether it means spending our allowance wisely, obtaining loans for college, applying for a mortgage or saving for retirement. And our nation’s libraries are here to help, with a wealth of free resources and programs.
>From April 21-28, 2018, more than 1,000 of our nation’s libraries will be participating in Money Smart Week®. Library events will focus on such diverse financial issues as first-time home buying, obtaining renovation loans, preparing a personal spending plan, the property tax appeal process, evaluating financial aid packages, choosing the proper Medicare plan and the basics of wills and trusts. Libraries are also offering programs that week on options for tax-free savings and charitable tax strategies.

Thousands to visit libraries for guidance on preserving heirlooms, keepsakes
Libraries of all types are preparing to celebrate Preservation Week, April 22 – 28, a time when libraries from across the country will provide information and expertise on how to preserve collectibles, recipes, photos, family documents, textiles, digital items and other valuable materials.

Libraries champion nation’s diversity through Día, April 30
Demographic trends indicate the United States will become a majority minority country in the near future. To help guide local communities during this time of rapid social change, libraries and librarians are developing programs, services and collections that are as diverse as the populations they serve.
On April 30, hundreds of libraries across the country will celebrate Día, a national library program that fosters literacy for all children from all backgrounds by connecting children and families to books, stories and other library resources. Libraries are a cornerstone of the American dream, offering equal access to information of all kinds and bringing access and opportunity to all. Programs like Día help libraries and librarians provide an inclusive environment in the community where all are treated with respect and dignity.

Choose Privacy Week 2018: Big Data Is Watching You
In the wake of Mark Zuckerberg’s Congressional testimony last week and the related explosion of public interest in how online personal data is collected, stored, shared, used and sometimes misused, this year’s Choose Privacy Week theme— “Big Data is Watching You”—could not be more perfectly timed.
Choose Privacy Week (May 1-8), the American Library Association's annual, week-long event that promotes the importance of individual privacy rights and celebrates libraries and librarians' unique role in protecting privacy, focuses on growing threat of "big data" analytics, especially in a time when technology, mobile computing, social media, and the growing adoption of "big data" analytics pose new threats to everyone's right to privacy.  Choose Privacy Week offers libraries and librarians a special opportunity to host privacy-centered programming, displays, and other learning opportunities that assist patrons and librarians alike to learn, think critically and make more informed choices about privacy.

ALA panel points out need for leveraging E-rate program to improve broadband access in tribal, rural areas
During a panel hosted last week by the American Library Association (ALA) on Capitol Hill, tribal librarians and rural telecom experts advocated for leveraging the federal E-rate program to improve broadband access in Tribal and rural areas. The discussion, moderated by National Museum of the American Indian Librarian Elayne Silversmith, focused on how broadband connectivity and telecommunications infrastructure in Tribal and rural regions advances education, provides economic opportunity and can close the digital divide.
"For many people in Tribal and rural areas, the lack of high-speed internet access means that competing in today’s economy is a steep climb and becoming steeper," said ALA President Jim Neal. "Public libraries across America provide internet-enabled technologies and other resources to meet the needs of their communities. And yet Tribal and rural library broadband capacity currently falls far short of the FCC’s benchmarks set for U.S. home access."

Libraries welcome House Administration Committee approval of FDLP Modernization Act
National library associations last week praised the Committee on House Administration’s approval of the FDLP Modernization Act (H.R. 5305). The bipartisan bill would update and strengthen the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) to ensure that members of the public have effective and long-term access to government information.

Preconference 'It Takes a Village' focuses on grassroots collaboration
The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) will host an all-day Preconference on how to foster discussion, engagement and impact throughout user communities at ALA’s Annual Conference in New Orleans. The session, called “It Takes a Village: Promoting Information Literacy Through Librarian-led Grassroots Initiatives,” will be presented by Sarah Simms, Undergraduate & Student Success Librarian at Louisiana State University and Sonnet Ireland, Reference Librarian at St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. It takes place from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018.

2018 Teens’ Top Ten Nominees announced
The Teens’ Top Ten is a “teen choice” list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year. Nominators are members of teen book groups in sixteen school and public libraries around the country selected by YALSA to participate.
This year’s list of nominees features 25 titles that were published between Jan. 1, 2017 and Dec. 31, 2017.

2018 Teen Read Week™ initiative launched
The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has launched its 2018 Teen Read Week (TRW) website, www.ala.org/teenread.
YALSA encourages libraries to connect with teens around the theme “It’s Written in the Stars: READ” during Teen Read Week™, Oct. 7–13, 2018. Library staff, afterschool providers and educators can use this theme to encourage teens to think and read outside of the box, as well as seek out fantasy, science fiction and other out-of- this-world reads.

ALSC names 2018 Notable Children's Books
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has selected its 2018 list of Notable Children’s Books. The list of titles includes fiction, nonfiction, poetry and picture books of special interest, quality, creativity and value to children 14 years of age and younger.

Save the Date: AASL Membership Meeting
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will hold its annual membership meeting at 6 p.m. Central (7 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Mountain, 4 p.m. Pacific) on Thursday, May 31. Held virtually, the membership meeting will be the second quarterly meeting of AASL Connection (#aaslcxn), a new conversation point for the school library profession.

AASL publishes new research on diversity in graphic novels
New research published in the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) peer-reviewed online journal, School Library Research (SLR),examines how race is depicted in graphic novels for teens in light of the “We Need Diverse Books” and “Reading Without Walls” movements. SLR promotes and publishes high-quality original research concerning the management, implementation and evaluation of school library programs.
