Intense Waters at Tahquamenon Falls

fallsThis summer, Tahquamenon Falls State Park reported increased water flow
due to the season's heavy rains. In a normal summer, the river rushes over
the falls at around 3,000 gallons per second. Due to the increased rainfall,
the park reported the falls running at 10,000 gallons per second in June
2017. The highest record for the falls is 50,000 gallons per second.

The Upper Falls - one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi
River - drops nearly 50 feet, with a series of smaller falls following. The
falls' characteristically amber color is derived from the tannins in the
water that leach from the cedar, hemlock, and spruce trees in the swampy
areas that drain into the river.

Don't miss our next History Skills Workshop.

Telling Stories: Setting Up an Oral History Project

September 29 - 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

workshop-emblemThe practice of conducting oral interviews is a major
accomplishment and an important step to preparing a larger historical
project. Those looking to start an oral history project will not want to
miss this workshop, which will cover the process of identifying
interviewees, developing questionnaires, and conducting interviews.
Attendees will also learn the importance of organizing and maintaining oral
histories so that they can be accessed by researchers in the future.

These training opportunities help historical organizations and interested
history advocates gain skills that can be applied in museums, organizations,
and personal collections. Registration is required for participation. Remote
attendance is also supported via our zoom communications system.
