Bring puppets into your library in a whole new way. Based on techniques
developed by the folks behind the production of *War Horse, *you’ll use big
pieces of newsprint to create a low-fi version of traditional *bunraku
*puppets.
In *bunraku, *puppets are essentially life-sized creatures controlled with
a team of visible operators, not string. Learn to make them “breathe,”
move, and come to life. We’ll also explore a smaller, tabletop version.

Join us for a free workshop on *Wednesday, May 31, from 10am - noon at
North Quad on the University of Michigan campus *and see how these
super-simple materials can create surprisingly lifelike motion!

We’ll even send you back to your library with as much newsprint as you like
so you’ll be ready-to-go with your next program.

Coming up soon:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*June 6 - U-M campus - Google Cardboard - virtual reality for under $10!*
Wish you could stand under the Eiffel tower and look around but can’t
afford the ticket to France? Instead, why not go there via Virtual Reality?
All you need is a $10 cardboard box fitted with lenses and your smartphone
(headphones suggested). The first 20 who register by 6/1 will leave the
workshop with a Google Cardboard viewer for their library!

*June 8 - U-M campus - Fashion Hacking - repurposing secondhand clothing*

Did you know that some of the largest thrift stores in the U.S. are right
in suburban Detroit? They’re bursting at the seams, often offering their
secondhand clothing for as little as 99 cents after a few weeks lingering
on the rack. Turn those low-cost secondhand finds into new creations for
less than the cost of a trip to the fabric store. Sewing is one of the
hottest programs in many public libraries! Registration here.

For a full schedule of our summer workshops throughout Michigan, visit our
Eventbrite page <http://makinginmichiganlibraries.eventbrite.com/>. We'll
be in Niles (near the Indiana border), Marquette (Upper Peninsula),
Frankenmuth (mid-Michigan), Benzonia (near Traverse City), Houghton Lake
(mid-Michigan), Alpena (Northeast Lower Peninsula), Ann Arbor (Southeastern
Michigan, and Coopersville (near Grand Rapids).
