[ALA Membership]

Hello,

As promised, I’m back with an update on our Fight for Libraries! Campaign. Right now, we are aiming to get 51 United States Senators to sign letters by our Senate champions. These letters call on the Senate Appropriations Committee to fund LSTA at $186.6 million and IAL at $27 million for FY 2018. So far, we’re doing okay, but not okay enough. Only 22 Senators have signed for LSTA, and only 14 are on board for IAL.

YOU can help change that, and I hope you will. You’ll find all the background information and links you need to quickly reach both of your senators by email, phone or Twitter at our Fight for Libraries! web portal<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT02NTc2NDkxJnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0MTgzODUmbGk9NDQxMTMwOTQ/index.html> and at ALA’s Legislative Action Center<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT02NTc2NDkxJnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0MTgzODUmbGk9NDQxMTMwOTU/index.html>. We need at least 51 Senators’ names on each of these letters by May 19, so there’s no time to lose!

The other great news is that we’re not in this fight alone. As posted on District Dispatch by the Office of Government Relations: “Today, that effort got an enormous boost when ALA delivered a powerful letter by eight leading national companies<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT02NTc2NDkxJnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0MTgzODUmbGk9NDQxMTMwOTY/index.html> with collective revenue measured in billions of dollars (Baker & Taylor, Follett School Solutions, Gale/Cengage, OverDrive, Peachtree Publishers, Penguin Random House, ProQuest and Rosen Publishing) to the offices of all Senators who have not already signed both the Senate LSTA and IAL letters urging them to do so.” Even better, the companies’ letter is open to online signature by any other similarly supportive business, should they decide to join our campaign.

Corporate support is terrific, but if your Senators don’t hear from you – their constituent – they are far less likely to sign the “Dear Appropriator” letters. Please, check our sortable tracker tool<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT02NTc2NDkxJnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0MTgzODUmbGk9NDQxMTMwOTc/index.html> to see if both of your Senators have signed both the LSTA and IAL letters and, if they both haven’t signed, contact them – or re-contact them if you’ve already reached out – TODAY<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT02NTc2NDkxJnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0MTgzODUmbGk9NDQxMTMwOTU/index.html>.

Thank you, all. I’ll keep you posted again soon, but please act TODAY!
