New Dual MLIS and Master of Public History Program Announced
The Wayne State University School of Information Sciences and the Department of History have announced a new joint degree program offering a Master of Arts in Public History and a Master of Library and Information Science. The program prepares students to be both information management professionals and public historians. Considering an Information Management Career? Join us for a career advising session on January 11.

Alumni and students are encouraged to join us on January 11, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. in Purdy Kresge Room 315 or via webinar.
Students and alumni are encouraged to meet with SIS Career Advisor Kim Schroeder as she shares her insights on information management careers. Kim has interviewed a half dozen successful IM professionals for their advice and will be sharing the full details of her conversations. Kim will also be joined by a recruiter from Quicken Loans who will discuss the role of information management at Rock Ventures and Quickens Loans and what they look for in prospective job candidates. Student Focus:
Angelia and Nubia Buckingham
Angelia and Nubia Buckingham aren't your usual classmates. This mother-daughter duo is taking on their MLIS studies together at Wayne State University – providing each other with inspiration and support as they pursue their academic and professional goals. Both mother and daughter are interested in data-driven specialties: Angelia is earning her MLIS with an information management specialization, while Nubia is specializing in health informatics. Faculty Updates
Hermina Anghelescu is finishing her semester as a visiting professor and an exchange scholar at the University of Tsukuba, School of Library, Information, and Media Studies.  In addition to teaching International and Comparative Librarianship, she has been involved with the library community in Tokyo. Stephen Bajjaly, Wayne State School of Information Sciences Associate Dean, has been elected as president of the Association for Library and Information Science Educators (ALISE). Dr. Bajjaly will join the ALISE Board of Directors as president-elect in February 2018 at the annual conference in Denver and assume the presidency in 2019.

Christine D'Arpa co-authored an article for a special issue of Library Trends entitled, "What's History Got to Do with It? Seventy Years of Historical Dissertation Research at the School of Information Sciences of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Library Trends 65/4).”

Laura Sheble had her work published in the November/December 2017 issue of American Scientist. The article "The Persistence and Peril of Misinformation<https://wayne.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=71069e78b2e149adc34550c95&id=1d56ad2fe0&e=bd7a7978c7>" was co-authored with Brian G. Southwell and Emily A. Thorson. The article focuses on the problem of misinformation in media and is adapted from their introductory chapter in the forthcoming book Misinformation and Mass Audiences.







Student Updates
Shatha Baydoun has been selected to represent the Wayne State University School of Information Sciences at the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans as part of the ALA Student-to-Staff Program.

Shannon McDermitt, M.L. Lenox and Kendra E. Moyer recently participated in the inaugural Wayne State University STEAM Challenge.<https://wayne.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=71069e78b2e149adc34550c95&id=891b07e02f&e=bd7a7978c7> The students were part of an inter-departmental team that competed with other student teams for up to $10,000 in prizes. Their team "Learning to Empathize" received an Honorable Mention for their project. Maggie Waligora, Laura Kennedy, and Allie Penn presented at the National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) conference in Pittsburgh on Thursday (October 26, 2017). Their presentation was entitled, "Say It Loud, Say It Proud: Advocacy and Engagement". Jesse Lopez (MLIS '16) has accepted the position of Learning and Student Success Librarian at Arizona State University. Jesse is an alumnus of Project IDoL.

Jennifer Meekhof (MLIS '11), Senior Manager for Content at ProQuest, recently had an article published in Cataloging & Classification Quarterly<https://wayne.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=71069e78b2e149adc34550c95&id=1baa0129c1&e=bd7a7978c7>. The article, entitled "Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for Cataloging: An Application and Evaluation" was written with co-author Amy Bailey, Head of Cataloging at Indiana University, Bloomington. Cameron Pierson (MLIS '16) has been accepted to the doctoral program at the University of Wellington in New Zealand and has been provided with funding through the Doctoral Scholarship.
