[Michlib-l] Picture/communication boards?

Hi everyone,

I complained to a friend who is a speech therapist about some frustrating
interactions I've had lately with patrons who I couldn't help because I
couldn't communicate with them. She suggested something called a
communication board or picture board, which is pretty much what it sounds
like. The common one you'll find if you do a search is this one:

http://www.bindependent.com/product/snc100/VidaTak-Picture-Communication-Board/

They're often used for people in hospitals who can't communicate due to
medical reasons, but they can also help people who are nonverbal or in
cases where two individuals just don't share a common language.

I'd like to create something like this for my library, but I can't find any
good models that are oriented to common tasks in libraries (a library card,
a printer, something to symbolize checking out an item, etc.).

Does anyone use something like this in their library? If so, I would really
appreciate it if you could send me a description and/or picture.

Thanks so much,

Emma Olmstead-Rumsey
