[Michlib-l] Libraries and Historical Societies

The Portland area has a very active historical society that doesn't have
any sort of building or space for their collections. In the past, they've
used various parts of the library for storage and to allow the community to
access their materials. Now, both the library and the historical society
are trying get organized, and the society would like to officially (and in
writing) stake out some space in the library as "theirs." Do any of your
libraries have written agreements with your local historical societies in
regards to storage of collections or use of the library space? Does your
library's collection policy include specific mention of local history
materials? Are you working closely with your local historical society, or
have you found it better to remain completely separate?

Any information that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
