Subject: [Michlib-l] Separation of Township and Library

Dear Colleagues,

The issue is whether or not the Township needs to cosign all or our expense/employee checks. Perhaps someone with this experience can clarify this issue for us. I have asked the library lawyer and he has responded that since our Board of Trustees are elected independently of the Township and because the library staff is not on the payroll of the Township, the Township Treasurer does not have to sign our expense or employee checks. But I have also been told that since we are spending taxpayer dollars to operate, the Township must cosign all of our checks. When I asked the lawyer for the township, he told me to ask our lawyer.

Sincerely,

Jaema Berman
