Subject: [Michlib-l] One week left to apply-System Director,
Northeast KS Library System, Lawrence, KS-Closes June 8
Message-ID: <066f01cf7db0$b9fc75c0$2df56140$@gossagesager.com>
System Director - Northeast Kansas Library System
Lead an innovative and accomplished Kansas library system, continuing
outstanding levels of service and effective resource sharing. The Executive
Board of the Northeast Kansas Library System
(headquartered in Lawrence, KS), seeks an experienced library
leader-responsive to member, staff, and community needs and skilled in
focusing the efforts of a team of talented professionals-as its next System
Director. NEKLS, one of the seven Kansas regional systems, is a multi-type
library system and works in partnership with its 118 member libraries
providing unique and innovative services. With a $2.8 million annual budget
(funded primarily from local property taxes) and 10 FTE system staff, NEKLS
serves a 14 county region (more than 40% of Kansas population). Member
libraries range from small, rural libraries to very large urban libraries.
NEKLS is a member-focused organization with a reputation for being an
incubator for statewide projects, for providing excellent continuing
education opportunities for member library directors, trustees and staff,
and for strong outreach services to its diverse membership, including
support for innovative technologies. Key projects include NExpress (an open
source ILS), Recollections Kansas (a digitization project), KLOW (KS
Libraries on the Web), Kansas Library Express (the statewide courier
service), and the accreditation and grant program for member libraries.
Ranked as one of the top ten best college towns, Lawrence, Kansas
(home of the University of KS Jayhawks) offers
much more than championship basketball tradition. Founded in 1854 by the New
England Emigrant Aid Society, Lawrence was a stop on both the Oregon and the
Santa Fe Trail. Later, Lawrence was the home of Langston Hughes and William
S. Burroughs. Considered one of the National Trust for Historic
Preservation's "Dozen Most Distinctive Communities," Lawrence is one of
those rare exceptions-a historic downtown that remains the heart of a city.
Centered on Massachusetts Street ("Mass Street"), the area features
boutiques, restaurants, bookstores, and music venues. With a population of
89,000 people, Lawrence and Northeast Kansas offer a charming blend of urban
and rural environments. In addition to nationally ranked public schools,
Lawrence and the area offer the Lied Center of Kansas, Spencer Museum of
Art, Liberty Hall, and Haskell Indian Nations University. Outdoor
recreational venues include nationally known golf courses, extensive planned
bike paths, Clinton Lake and Prairie Park. Two metro areas- Kansas City and
Topeka- are a 30 minute drive away. For additional details on NEKLS and the
Northeast Kansas region, see NEKLS Links
.
Responsibilities. The System Director, under the direction of the 18-member
Executive Board, has overall responsibility for leadership and management of
a fourteen county multi-type library system that seeks to pursue leadership
and innovation in library service. Duties will include management of
planning, budgets, personnel, service functions, and legislative advocacy.
The System Director works with the Board, staff, member libraries, other
Kansas systems, and the State Library to establish the strategic vision for
the System, aligning its mission with member library needs and priorities.
The Director will also ensure an active NEKLS presence in the statewide
library community and professional activities. For complete details, visit
NEKLS System Director Job Description
.
Qualifications. Minimum qualifications are an ALA-accredited Master's Degree
in Library Science and five years of progressively responsible
administrative experience. Essential attributes and skills include: vision,
creativity, energy and enthusiasm; superior interpersonal skills;
flexibility; political acumen; collaborative and consensus-building skills;
experience in recruiting, mentoring, evaluating and retaining an excellent
staff; and a desire to continue the tradition of excellence and innovation
within the System. Success working with and reporting to a governing board,
political advocacy experience, the ability to work with member libraries on
legal, governance and policy issues, and prior experience in regional
systems or consortia are additional preferred qualifications.
Compensation. The hiring salary range is $80,000-100,000 (placement being
dependent on experience and qualifications) with an attractive benefits

Greetings All,
I am writing to let you know that after over thirteen years at the Library of Michigan, I am leaving my position as Director of Statewide Library Services. With the changeover of state librarian, I decided to take this opportunity to make a change as well in order to reach out for new opportunities and collaborative efforts to help communities and end users with their information needs.
It has been my utmost pleasure and honor to serve in a statewide capacity managing the great work of Statewide Library Services (SLS) running grant programs - via federal LSTA dollars, specially directed state funding, or private foundation funds such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; developing and sponsoring training for library staff and trustees via workshops, webinars and conferences; consulting and providing resources to Michigan libraries such as QSAC, Plinkit, and SL21; collecting public library data, producing the Data Digest and certifying public library staff for state aid purposes; minding and sharing statewide and national developments and trends, especially relating to broadband and technology; approving technology plans and providing training and consulting for E-rate; creating and coordinating the annual Michigan Reads One State One Children?s Book program; coordinating the summer reading program resources via the national CSLP collaborative; maintaining the michlib-l listserv and the interactive library directory; and managing the ever-evolving Michigan eLibrary (www.mel.org), including MeLCat, Michigan Online Resources for Educators (MORE), Michigana, the provision of commercial ?deep web? databases to all Michigan residents via seamless authentication, and librarian vetted web content all wrapped into a virtual public library with an evolving public interface design that is relevant, user friendly, and responds to changing needs. Phew! I hope it has been helpful!
I look forward to seeing you all in the future as our paths cross, and I wish each of you success both professionally and personally. If you want to stay in touch with me, please feel free to email me at: sheryl.mase at gmail.com Cheers!

Subject: [Michlib-l] Announcing a New Michigan eLibrary (MeL)!!
Message-ID: <7ad9fcb9ae8647ba93ecc6c01ca76231@BN1PR09MB124.namprd09.prod.outlook.com>
Good Afternoon! The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce a "soft launch" debut of the new and improved Michigan eLibrary, Monday, June 2, 2014. For the next 2 weeks, you can check out the "new" MeL from the link found on the current MeL homepage, http://mel.org.
Besides an amazing new "look and feel" for the website, we have implemented a discovery service, so you will see a search box on both the MeL homepage and also on the Michigana homepage. Using the search box on the MeL homepage, you will access MeLCat, selected MeL subscription eResources (databases), curricular content/websites from the Michigan Online Resources for Educators (M.O.R.E.), MeL gateway websites, and selected digital Michigan history projects. Currently, not all of the databases and their content are included in the discovery search; for a list of those that are not now available for discovery, please see the alpha-list in MeL Databases and look for the red asterisk. Using the search box on the Michigana homepage, you will discover the content of many of the digital history collections which have been harvested for inclusion in MeL.
We have also redesigned both MeL Kids and Teens Gateways. At MeL Kids, you will see to our new mascot, "Brookie" and his pal "ReadIt" who will introduce young MeL users to resources that can help them be successful in school and have fun too. MeL Teens is just, well....cool!
The MeL Teams at the Library of Michigan and the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services have been working on this redesign for well over a year with Innovative Interfaces Inc., http://iii.com/ and EBSCO EDS, http://ebscohost.com/discovery for the discovery service and with Strudell Studios, a division of Courtland Consulting, http://www.strudellstudios.com/index.php for the website design. It has truly been a process and a work in progress, but it is time for a debut!
During the next 2 weeks, we ask that you check out and use the new MeL, and if you would, let us know what you think. A wise woman once quoted from Voltaire that "The perfect is the enemy of the good.", and while we would never claim perfection, we do think that MeL 2014 is a vast improvement on what all Michigan residents have used and benefited from these many years. You can contact me, or my colleague Sonya Norris, norriss2 at michigan.gov with your comments, critiques, etc. The MeL Team will continue to work to make sure that the new Michigan eLibrary continues to grow and responds to user's needs, so we know you'll be watching!
We plan to say good-bye to the current MeL which has been in use since 2008 on June 16, 2014. An official press release will be forthcoming. Many thanks for your support and promotion for the Michigan eLibrary, a service of the Library of Michigan!

Message-ID: <654d76efefaa49f1a427ce38b829760f@BY2PR09MB077.namprd09.prod.outlook.com>
Don't forget about the monthly list of library-related webinars available on the Library of Michigan website. The document is full of FREE webinar content from Michigan and around the country that you may find useful.
Each month you can find the document here: www.michigan.gov/libraryce
Scroll down to the Online Education (National) section to find the PDF document for this month or access this month's document directly here:
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/LM_2014_Free_Webinars_June.pdf_457954_7.pdf?20140602122018
Highlights for June include:
* June 3 - Weeding Made Easy (Washington State Library)
Collection Manager is a free Excel spreadsheet that analyzes three reports from your automation system, i.e., number of items in each library
collection, last year's circulation for each collection, number of titles added to each collection during the past year, to recommend which
collections to weed, which collections to expand by buying more titles this year than last year, which collections to buy fewer titles, and even
how many titles to purchase in each collection
* June 5 - Best Small Libraries in America: Vital, Innovative and Thriving (WebJunction)
In collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries and Library Journal, we are pleased to host this webinar featuring the two
most recent award winners.
* June 12 - MeLCat Reports (MCLS)
Do you know what a Too Long report is? In MeLCat, there are reports you can run to find things that have fallen through the cracks. Those items
that have been in a specific status for too long. Attend this webinar to find out what reports are available, how to run them and what actions to
take with the results. Come with questions!
* June 18 - Be Fearless: Public Speaking for Librarians (WebJunction)
Do you quake at the thought of public speaking? Are you also faced with the need to communicate to audiences, small or large, the importance
of your work in libraries? You really can overcome your anxieties and master the art of public speaking.
If you have questions about a particular webinar, please contact the organization that is providing the information. There are links to all the organizations along with the listings.
Most of these are recorded by the entity providing the webinar. Please check their website for details on availability of archived recordings.

Just a reminder that the federal Summer Food Service Program may something you can do in conjunction with your Summer Reading program. There is information about the Michigan program at the Library of Michigan's www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices in the Summer Reading section. You can also see the Public Library Information Sheet.
TechSoup has also done a general webinar about participating in the program and the link is below. Enjoy!

Summer Reading, Summer Feeding
Providing real meals would be a great attraction for your summer library program. And the USDA reimburses meals served in rural areas: breakfast = $2.0375; lunch or supper = $3.56; snack = $.855. Libraries can participate by either serving the meals themselves or providing a location for another organization to serve meals.
Lots of kids go hungry in the summer. 32,300,000 children (45% of all US children) live in low-income families. 16,100,000 children (22% of all US children) live in poor families. During the school year, USDA's free and reduced lunch program helps feed 21 million, but, in the summer, only 2.1 million children are fed through USDA's Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) at http://tinyurl.com/lb8kycj.
View the recorded TechSoup Webinar to learn about how you and your organization can increase the numbers of youth who benefit from free meals in your community this summer.

"The following message was sent to directors of Michigan academic and community college libraries and to the Executive Board and Executive Director of the Michigan Library Association on Monday, June 2, 2014:
This message is to inform the Michigan Library Association that the librarians listed below have been constituted to develop the documentation necessary for the establishment of a new academic library association to serve the needs and interests of academic libraries and librarians within the State of Michigan. Additional information will be forthcoming and will be available at www.miala.org.
It is our reluctant conclusion that the Michigan Library Association (MLA) no longer serves the needs of academic librarians and libraries in the state."

Hello. As part of the ongoing partnership between libraries and the Secretary of State's Office, I'm hoping you will consider sharing the following information as well as the attached flyers with your patrons. As always, thanks so much for your help!
1. New Veterans Designation for Driver's Licenses and State IDs
Note: In May, I provided you with a short message to share on the new veteran's designation for driver's licenses and state IDs. I subsequently received a request from a library director for a flyer on this new service that could be posted in libraries. Thanks for that suggestion! In response, we created the attached flyer that we hope you will post and if you didn't get a chance to share the original message with your patrons, here it is:
Secretary of State announces veteran designation for licenses and ID cards
Michigan veterans can now display their proof of service right on their Michigan driver's license or state ID card, making it easer to receive benefits that often go unclaimed, such as retail discounts, promotions and special offers. According to Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, the new designation is available to all honorably discharged Michigan veterans and is free of charge when renewing a state license or ID or applying for one.
2. Voter Registration Deadline
Please share the following message on the upcoming registration deadline for the August 5 election. I've also provided a flyer for you to post (see attached).
Election Alert
Election Day in Michigan is Tuesday, August 5. To vote, you must be registered by July 7. For information on how to register or to see if you are already registered, go to Michigan.gov/vote.

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to pass along a program recommendation that we hosted recently
that was well attended and a great program.
It is Our Fires Still Burn: The Native American Experience, a one hour
documentary by Audrey Geyer. Audrey comes to your library and after the
documentary conducts a question and answer section.
Audrey is based out of Brighton and can be contacted at:
AudreyGeyer at aol.com or 810-772-9628.
More about the film:
This exciting and compelling one hour documentary invites viewers into
the lives of contemporary Native American role models living in the
Midwest. It dispels the myth that American Indians have disappeared
from the American horizon, and reveals how they continue to persist,
heal from the past, confront the challenges of today, keep their culture
alive, and make great contributions to society. Their experiences will
deeply touch both Natives and non-Natives and help build bridges of
understanding, respect, and communication.
The tragic history of Native Americans is considered by many to be our
?American Holocaust.? This can be seen in the history of the
Boarding School Era, during which time Native children were forcibly
removed from their homes and placed into boarding schools. Interviewees
explain how this past trauma continues to negatively impact their
emotional and physical health today and contribute to urgent social
problems.
To help heal this historical trauma, Native peoples are reclaiming
their spiritual and cultural identity. In the documentary, an Ojibwa
Firekeeper demonstrates the ancient healing ceremony of the Sacred Fire.
Also, a Native American businessman, journalist, artist and youth
advocate share how they use ancestral teachings to foster diversity and
creativity as well as to educate and initiate social change.
The stories shared in this documentary are powerful, startling,
despairing and inspiring. They reflect an American history fraught with
the systematic destruction of a people. Yet, amidst the debris of
suffering and trauma, there is resilience and a profound remembering and
healing taking place today, which will also benefit the next Seven
Generations.
If you'd like to know more about the program or anything else feel free
to contact me. It would make a great addition to your program
calendar.
Thanks,
Kelly

Hi Kelly, Ruth, and all,
BlueCloud Cataloging will be released sometime this summer, and there is no
additional cost to existing SirsiDynix customers to implement it. The
company has stated that the first release will not be a complete
replacement for the existing cataloging module in WorkFlows, but it does
have some features that we are looking forward to. I hope that this helps
a bit.

Message-ID: <00f001cf8023$f50b1a70$df214f50$@gossagesager.com>
Director of Library Services-Berkeley Public Library (CA)
A spirited Library seeking a spirited Director! The Berkeley Public Library
Board of Trustees seeks a creative
and thoughtful Director of Library Services to lead a team of talented
professionals continuing to position the Library as a prominent player in
Berkeley?s continuum of learning and inspiration. Through traditional
formats and growing digital collections, the Library serves as a local
resource contributing to local creativity, preserving the community?s
collective history, nourishing the arts, supporting small businesses and job
seekers, and welcoming its citizens and enriching their lives. The City of
Berkeley has always put public libraries at the center of city life. A
highly skilled and creative staff (113 FTE) at the Central Library and four
branches welcomed 1.4 million visitors in 2013 and loaned 1.9 million items.
With a dedicated funding source (annual budget-$16 million) and a quality
collection of 600,000 items, Berkeley Public Library leads the state in per
capita use. A five-member Board of Trustees, appointed by the City Council,
governs the Library. The Berkeley Public Library
Foundation, established in 1997, recently raised $3 million dollars
supporting the Branch Library renovation program. Additional support comes
from the vital Friends of the Berkeley Public Library through strong
fundraising and advocacy efforts.
The City of Berkeley, ?the city with a small population and a big
reputation,? is located on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. With
more than 120,000 residents, Berkeley is a welcoming and diverse
community?proud of their heritage as a center of academic achievement
(University of California, Berkeley), scientific exploration, free speech,
and the arts. People come for the culture and stay for the food - Berkeley
is a cultural and culinary destination where residents and visitors find a
dynamic city with an international flavor. Attractions include two arts
districts, the Berkeley Marina, state-of-the-art pedestrian and bicycle
paths, stunning outdoor recreational opportunities, farmers markets, and
unlimited senior activities. Oakland, San Francisco, and the rolling hills
of wine country are all within close proximity of Berkeley and offer
additional cultural and recreational amenities. For more information on the
Library, Berkeley and the Bay Area, visit Berkeley Links
(http://www.gossagesager.com/BPLlinks.htm).
Responsibilities. The Director of Library Services serves as administrative
head of the Library and reports to a Library Board of Trustees, serves as
staff to the Board, and is responsible for implementing policy, developing
goals and objectives, supervising staff, administering the library budget
and directing day to day operations. Although reporting to the Library
Board, the Director serves as part of the City's management team. Major
responsibilities include: developing and recommending service policy to the
Board of Library Trustees; planning and directing the implementation of
goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and service standards for the
Library; evaluating the effectiveness of library services and programs in
meeting community needs; maintaining effective relations with other city
departments and a variety of community and support organizations, groups,
and other individuals; directing the preparation and administration of the
library?s budget; recommending applications for public and private funds for
library programs; and supervising and evaluating the activities of
professional staff. Please visit Director of Library Services
for the complete job
description.
Qualifications. A Master's degree in Library Science or a closely related
field (or equivalent) and eight (8) FTE years of management, supervisory or
administrative experience including a minimum of four (4) FTE years of
administration of library programs and services and four (4) FTE years of
supervising professional staff through subordinate supervisors.
Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the
college coursework on a year-for-year basis. Preferred qualifications
include: demonstrated knowledge of administrative principles and methods,
including goal setting, program and budget development; broad experience in
working with new library technologies; meeting service delivery,
programmatic, and administrative challenges with innovative solutions; keeps
staff and public aware of current issues, events and plans; thinks both
creatively and pragmatically and is flexible and attentive to staff and
community concerns; has proven ability in labor relations with success in
negotiating and communicating with union leadership.
Compensation. The salary range is $137,772-$189,396 (with placement
dependent upon experience and qualifications) with an attractive benefits
package.
For further information, contact Bradbury Associates/Gossage Sager
Associates via email or phone. To start the application process, send a
meaningful cover letter and your r?sum? as Word or pdf attachments to Karen

All,
Brigette has finished compiling the statewide, consolidated statistics (library by library stats are n/a now but may be available in the future) for the first week of MAP Year 2. We are very pleased to share with you the great news that the number of checkouts is up 19% for the first week of MAP Year 2, vs the first week of MAP Year 1. Thank you for all of your hard work and promotion on behalf of the MAP program. By the way, the top five destinations for MAP pass users in MAP Year 2, Week 1 were as follows:
Michigan Science Center
DIA
Yankee Air Museum
Arab American Museum
Gilmore Car Museum
Three of these five (Michigan Science Center, Arab American Museum, Gilmore Car Museum) are new to MAP this year. And I am very pleased to see the Gilmore Car Museum, the premier automobile museum in the country, included in this list. This tells us that MAP is garnering plenty of attention outside the greater metropolitan Detroit area, too. Along those lines please remember that there is promotional material (printable brochure, bookmarks, posters, etc) for MAP available at this link: http://tln.lib.mi.us/map/
Potential cultural partners are still taking notice of MAP. To that end, I am pleased to announce that sometime in the next several days we will be adding our 110th venue to the program. The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) has submitted its application to become a MAP partner. We will be adding their information http://www.mocadetroit.org/ to the MAP website sometime during the next several days.
Throughout the coming weeks and months we will be featuring and sharing with you a "Top Ten" list of our favorite MAP attractions. Look for our lists very soon!
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Michigan Activity Pass program, or if you become aware of any venues in your library's service area that would like to partner with us.
Sincerely,

Hello Everyone,
As self-publishing becomes more prominent, how do you handle requests to donate or purchase items, particularly from local residents? Does anyone have a policy they would be willing to share? What I have encountered are vastly different levels of quality and it is difficult to say to a local author that their item isn't of good enough "quality" for us to add it.
I am looking to add something to both our donation and collection development policies.
Thanks for your input.

HSM's New Partnership With MLive Shines a Spotlight on Michigan's Historical
Destinations!
The Historical Society of Michigan is partnering with MLive newspapers,
formerly Booth Newspapers, to provide readers with detailed information
about the hundreds of historical destinations throughout Michigan. Each
week, the MLive "Travel" pages will feature one of the 475-plus museums,
historic sites, and history attractions that are listed in HSM's Historic
Michigan Travel Guide. The MLive papers are The Ann Arbor News, The Bay City
Times, The Flint Journal, The Grand Rapids Press, Jackson Citizen Patriot,
Kalamazoo Gazette, Muskegon Chronicle, and The Saginaw News.

cid:image008.jpg at 01CF80A7.553B5800
cid:image009.jpg at 01CF80A7.553B5800
Each historical destination that is featured is chosen from the Travel
Guide, and all sections of the state will be represented: Western, Central,
Eastern, Northern, and Upper Peninsula. The articles contain a brief
description; a photo; details on location, hours, admission cost, and
visitor accessibility; and contact information of the historical
destination.
This partnership with MLive is another benefit for our member organizations,
and it focuses on one of our five mission points: support for local history
organizations. Plus, this is a great opportunity for the public to learn
more about Michigan's diverse heritage and cultures. It's another way that
HSM is keeping Michigan's history at everyone's fingertips.
Interested in purchasing a
Historic Michigan Travel Guide? Go to our online store to order yours today!
The Travel Guide is also available at all Michigan Meijer stores and your
local bookstore.
Interested in becoming part of the Historic Michigan Travel Guide? The key
requirement for inclusion is a current membership in the Historical Society
of Michigan. To join, click here. The
Travel Guide is aimed directly at historical, cultural, and heritage
tourism, so the site should be considered a tourist destination that is
focused on history, and it should offer regular hours that it is open to the
public. Contact us at hsm at hsmichigan.org for

Nyama,
We have several local authors that we have put their self-published book on our shelves. One of them has actually come in and replaced the original copies after she became more well known and sold more books. She had them redone with better editing, etc.
We feel if they want to take the chance of putting an inferior piece of work out there for the public to see that is their choice.
What we do is look at the subject matter and see if our community would actually read this book or not. We are a very small library with limited shelf space.

Wondered if your library uses the Epson TM-T881V Restick printer, with adhesive labels, for your holds? If so, how do you like printing hold slips that way. Does it save time? We have self-serve hold shelves and currently print hold cover slips on 8 ? x 11 sheets of paper. Depending on the material size, we may have to fold a sheet several times to fit it correctly and then rubber band it. We've seen the video of how it works, but would love to see it performed in real time.

Asking for advice.
I have an old family bible.
It is a very hard leather bible that locks.
The cover is now off and I would like to have it rebound.
Can anyone recommend a company that does this.
I live in Waterford, work in South Lyon.
Thanks for any advice.

Cathy,
I recently was in the same situation as you. I first took our bible to the conservation lab at the Bentley Historical Library at U of M, but they can no longer do private commissions, so they referred me to the Bessenberg Bindery in Dexter. They specialize in restoring old books including bible repair. I?ve seen some of their work and it is excellent! Here?s their website:

Good luck!

Library System
Message-ID: <02e201cf8419$e081b740$a18525c0$@gossagesager.com>
Executive Director-Pierce County (WA) Library System!
Bring the World of Information and Imagination to All - in a beautiful
Pacific-Northwest setting. The Board of Trustees of the
Pierce County Library System seeks
both a visionary leader and an experienced, capable manager-creative and
innovative in building and maintaining successful teams-to lead the
organization in providing quality services and programs for this diverse and
culturally rich library system. The award winning (2013 IMLS National Medal)
Pierce County Library System serves all of unincorporated Pierce County and
15 annexed cities and towns-a total of 555,285 suburban and rural residents.
Established as an independent municipal corporation, the Library is an
independent taxing district with authority to levy a property tax as well as
issue bonds and special levies with a vote of the public. With a $25.6
million annual budget and approximately 406 staff (236 FTEs) with union
representation, Pierce County Library System welcomed 2.4 million visitors
and loaned 7.6 million items in 2013. Governed by an appointed board of
trustees and supported by a successful Foundation and active Friends
organizations, the System's 18 libraries and virtual services bring people
together and provide opportunities for learning, enrichment and fun-and even
greater levels of service excellence in the years ahead.
It's hard to imagine a better place to live than Pierce County-surrounded by
saltwater shores and towering mountain peaks. Pierce County is notable for
being home to stunning Mount
Rainier and six major rivers. The County ranges from bustling cities with
rich culture and arts communities and active nightlife to quiet timber
towns. Small-town farmers and big-city professionals, active retired couples
and families and talented trades people-all share a northwest pioneer
spirit. Pierce County Library System shares the County with the Tacoma
Public Library, Puyallup Library, and Roy Library. The County also has
sixteen school districts (fifteen served by PCLS) and the area is home to
several two and four year colleges including the University of Washington
Tacoma, University
of Puget Sound,
Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma Community College, and Pierce College.
The Port of Tacoma is the sixth busiest container port in North America and
Joint Base Lewis-McChord contributes more than 42,000 military and civilian
jobs to the local economy. Pierce County's neighbors include Olympia
(Washington's capital city), Seattle and King County-all with additional
opportunities for exploring diverse cultural and recreational amenities. For
more information on the Library, Pierce County and the region, see
Pierce County Links.
Responsibilities. The Executive Director is responsible for planning,
developing, directing, and leading all operations and activities of the
Library System; implementing and administering policy in pursuit of the
Library's mission, vision and values; and providing administrative support
to the Board of Trustees. Additional responsibilities include: representing
the Library System to local governments, civic and community organizations,
professional associations and the general public; assuring a program of
service that meets the needs of Pierce County customers and community
members; accomplishing short-term and long-range planning; and implementing
and managing the budget and other resources using sound business practices
to assure the effective and efficient use of tax-supported resources.
Qualifications. A Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS), the
ability to obtain and hold a State of Washington Librarian Certification,
and a minimum of 10 years of library administrative management and direct
supervisory experience in a multi-location library system are required. Any
combination of education and experience which would provide the required
knowledge and skills to allow successful performance of the job and qualify
for certification may be considered. Essential executive competencies
include: excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust and
effective partnerships; a commitment to developing others, facilitating
change, building successful teams and leading through vision and values;
customer focus, business acumen and strategic decision making ability; and
possessing the inclinations and dispositions that characterize successful
leadership. See the official Executive Director Job Description for a
complete list of the essential functions. Proven success working effectively
as director reporting to a governing board and success working in a union
environment are valuable desired experiences.
Compensation. The position offers a starting salary range of
$135,000-155,000 (with placement dependent on experience and qualifications)
and an attractive benefits package.

Good morning.
I would like to speak with libraries who have a levied millage using PA 164 of 1877.
If you have this millage do you also have additional funding from a municipalities general fund? (Tax appropriated not from a millage.)
We have some questions and would like to speak with the financial director of these funds.
You may contact me at either number listed below.
Thank you so much.

Message-ID: <8e78629590a54e38adba1b1f47ef3324@FS-MAIL13.Adrian.gov>
Good morning.
I would like to speak with libraries who have a levied millage using PA 164 of 1877.
If you have this millage do you also have additional funding from a municipalities general fund? (Tax appropriated not from a millage.)
We have some questions and would like to speak with the financial director of these funds.
You may contact me at either number listed below.
Thank you so much.

Subject: [Michlib-l] Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words
Message-ID:
Larry Martin's WWII- In Their Own Words program was held at the Spring Arbor Branch of the Jackson District Library on Saturday, June 7, 2014
Homer Jackson of Spring Arbor, was featured in Larry's DVD interview and Homer's comments after brought his story to life. Homer was a pilot of a B-29 bomber, which was one of the most powerful at that time. Mr. Jackson was enthusiastic to tell his story and the group of visitors enjoyed the presentation. At this program we also had four other gentlemen who served in WWII, a submarine vet, PT Boat vet, a Seabee and another from the Navy.
Mr. Martin also brought memorabilia from the war. One of the more interesting pieces was a silk map that was included in a pilot's and crew's life jackets along with other items to help them if their plane went down.
Thank you Larry Martin and Homer Jackson !
Please watch for four more of Larry's programs starting August 2 with Army Combat Engineer, Bob Dietsch; September 6 with Sam Willoughby, RAF; October 4 with Russian Lieutenant, Lezer Kelektor; and November 1 with Jim Lewis a Submarine crew member. Each event with feature a personal appearance by the WWII Veterans.

During the second part of the program, participants are given time to

be time for group help and brainstorming during each session.

Subject: [Michlib-l] 24" wide carrels for sale
Message-ID:
Michigan Libraries -
Benzonia Public Library has been renovating, and we no longer need these 24? wide carrels. Height is adjustable from 28? to 36?.
We have assembled them as 3 pairs (starter and add-on in each one) and are asking $200 for each pair. They can be assembled in different configurations if you need them that way. They are 3 years old. You would be responsible for transporting them from Benzonia (which is 32 miles WSW of Traverse City and worth a summer visit to the nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes ? ?most beautiful place in America?.)
The photo shows 2 of the pairs, and the others match. Sorry about the construction dust on the end of the carrel in the photo!
(You can see new carrels in the Demco catalog at http://www.demco.com/goto?BLS174154&ALL0000&es=20140525154614375176).

Subject: 24" wide carrels for sale

Subject: [Michlib-l] Public Library Directors New Annual Report/State Aid
Application Software
Message-ID: <316250b0b2654c15acb62940f4d961fa@BLUPR09MB0184.namprd09.prod.outlook.com>
Public Library Directors,
We are excited to announce that the Library of Michigan is moving to a new and improved system for the collection of data for our annual statistical report. When the FY 2014/2015 Public Library Annual Report/State Aid Application opens on October 1st of 2014, the Library of Michigan will be using Counting Opinions' Library Performance Assessment software LibPAS. This new software with its intuitive design, allows for a much smoother data collection process and many more robust reporting features for libraries.
The Library of Michigan will be offering LibPAS training webinars, open to all public library directors or their designated staff that complete the Annual Report/State Aid Application. Public Library Directors will also receive a letter early next week containing their libraries login information, please feel free to explore the new software. Acclimation time to the new software is anticipated to be very short as the survey order and data entry will remain unchanged. However, the new software does have some features that users will not be familiar with and we ask you to please attend one of the webinars offered.
LibPAS Webinars:
* July 1st at 1:00pm
* July 23rd at 2:00pm
* July 31st at 3:00pm
Participants may register to attend one of these webinars at http://www.solutionwhere.com/lom/cw/showcourse.asp?49
An archived recording will be made available for those who cannot attend.
