All,

As you are probably aware, there have been a number of vehicle recalls in the United States this year. A new website launched yesterday by the USDOT/NHTSA gives your car-conscious Michigan library patrons the ability to enter a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to quickly learn if a specific vehicle has NOT been repaired as part of a safety recall in the last 15 years. I tried the search with both of our cars, one of which is two years old and the other 10, and the results for both cars were the same, namely:

Number of Open Recalls: 0

The search would NOT have worked for my recently traded in 1998, 330,000 miles on the odometer, rapidly approaching hooptie status sedan, as recall information is only available going back to January 1, 1999.
