Hi All-The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN, http://www.micollegeaccess.org/) works with parents, counselors and students on college readiness and access. In their portal-the Michigan College Access Portal, there are links to LearningExpress Library for College Preparation-ACT, Michigan colleges, financial aid, planning and much more. On November 20 at 3 pm, MCAN is hosting a free Webinar on the portal and are inviting libraries and other community organizations to participate so they can help in creating a college going culture in their communities. Please scroll down to the Professional Development section of the eNewsletter below for information on the Webinar.

You will also be receiving in via U.S. mail, posters and bookmarks along with letter from me and Lisa King, Michigan College Access Network Assistant Director introducing you to the Michigan College Access Portal and encouraging you to promote it to your tweens/teens and their parents.

Library Cooperative Directors, I would be most appreciative if you would share this email/information with the library directors in your Co-op.

Kind regards,

~Deb

Common Core Next Steps
The state House took action this week that allows the Michigan Department of Education to resume funding and implementation of the Common Core, which are high standards meant to provide high levels of teaching for all students. The MDE's work on Common Core has been on hold since October 1st due to a legislative vote earlier this year that put a pause on MDE spending on CCSS.

"Michigan students deserve world-class standards that prepare them for education beyond high school," said Brandy Johnson, executive director of Michigan College Access Network. "The CCSS set a high bar so that our students have a shot at competing in the 21st century global economy. MCAN applauds our elected officials for prioritizing postsecondary readiness for all Michigan students."

MCAN is part of the Michigan Coalition for High Student Standards, a statewide coalition of more than 130 organizations working to support the full implementation of the Common Core State Standards. For young people involved in the justice system, navigating a pathway into and through postsecondary education and the workforce is often met with a range of barriers including social stigmatization arising from court involvement, lack of access to resources and services, low expectations of educational success, lack of employment opportunities, probation and parole requirements that do not support postsecondary goals, and gaps in academic attainment and college readiness. This webinar will feature a discussion of NYEC's recent report "Promoting Postsecondary Success of Court-Involved Youth: Lessons from NYEC Postsecondary Success Pilot" and include presentations from profiled programs.

New Report: The State of Communities of Color in the U.S. Economy

In 2010, communities of color comprised more than 36 percent of the U.S. population, but they are projected to be the majority of the nation's population by 2043. As we rocket toward a more multiracial future, closing racial and ethnic gaps in earnings, education, and other requisite areas is imperative. While making these changes and addressing these issues will be challenging, what we stand to gain, both as individuals and as a nation, is enormous.

NBER Working Paper Series The Missing Manual: Using National Student Clearinghouse Data to Track Postsecondary Outcomes
Source: National Bureau of Economic Research

This paper explores the promises and pitfalls of using National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) data to measure a variety of postsecondary outcomes. The authors first describe the history of NSC, the basic structure of its data, and recent research interest in using NSC data. Second, using information from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), they calculate enrollment coverage ratings for NSC data over time, by state, institution type, and demographic student subgroups.

To illustrate how a collection of measurement errors may affect estimates of levels and gaps in postsecondary attendance and persistence, they performed several case-student analyses using administrative transcript data from Michigan public colleges.
